The Georgia High School Fencing League has joined USA Fencing. Here is an explanation of the benefits for our GHSFL fencers:
1. Every individual fencer is now an individual High School Club member with USA Fencing
2. Each individual fencer is eligible to earn official USA Fencing classifications at GHSFL tournaments
3. Individual fencers are eligible for the USA Fencing High School All-Academic and All-American Teams
4. End of year certificates of participation for all individuals
Frequently Asked Questions:
–Does my child have to upgrade to full USA Fencing membership to earn ratings at GHSFL tournaments?
NO. Your child now has a membership number in the USA Fencing database that allows your child to earn USA Fencing ratings at our GHSFL tournaments
–If my child wants to upgrade to full USA Fencing membership, how do I upgrade?
If your child wants to fence in USA Fencing tournaments outside the GHSFL, your child will need to upgrade to full USA Fencing membership. The cost is $25 payable to USA Fencing. Your child’s membership profile may be accessed at usafencing.org <usafencing.org> . Click on “membership” and follow the prompts
–What are ratings and how does my child earn a rating?
Ratings are letter classifications (A,B, C, D, E) earned by fencers. A rating is earned based upon a fencer’s result in a tournament. The rating given is determined by the size (number of fencers) and strength (number of rated fencers) competing in a tournament. Attached is a PDF showing the possible ratings earned at tournaments
–Why do ratings matter?
Many college and university coaches use ratings as indicators of experience and successful performance. Think of ratings as similar to belts in karate. Ratings are also used for seeding purposes at tournaments
–Why is All-Academic recognition and/or All-American recognition each year important for my child?
Colleges and universities recognize the importance of these awards. There are scholarship opportunities linked to these awards. All-Academic scholarships have been won by freshman and sophomores, as well as juniors and seniors. There is additional recognition for those fencers who have earned All-Academic status in all four years of their high school career
